Calvin James appeared on the driver's side. He held his Uzi at waist level, his index finger pulling the trigger back and sending a blanket of automatic rounds through the front seat of the Mazda.

Manning leaped from the station wagon and rushed up next to James. The stubby barrel of a MAC-11 shot from the Mazda's rear window, and the Canadian fired a 3-round burst. The subgun fell from the Mazda to the road. Through the window Katz saw the dark shadow that had held it slump in its seat.

In the back seat Katz could see the man who had looked like a college professor. His head rated on the back of the front seat, blood pouring from an open gash on the temple. His dead eyes stared out into the darkness.
